Public Open Space Surrender
Wednesday 29 November 2017
Prescot Town Council were last night shocked to learn that Knowsley Borough Council (KMBC) had identified King George V Memorial Playing Fields aka Brown’s Field as a site that they intend to surrender for development, the proceeds of which will be used to fund the creation of a Knowsley Green Space Trust which will provide maintenance and development in other parks around Knowsley.
News reached the Town Council last night following a cabinet meeting of Knowsley Borough Council were a list of 17 sites for surrender was agreed. Brown’s Field was the only site identified within the Town Boundary to be offered up, however the Town Council believe the impact of such a loss will be profound, and would ask that if Prescot had to lose some land why not Carr Lane woods which provides much less public amenity.
Browns Field is a wide open public space with excellent site lines across its entirety providing a safe place to be. As such the site is very well used by the local community including dog walkers and local children’s football teams.
Browns Field is leased to Prescot Town Council by KMBC. The park is predominately maintained by the Town Council’s Grounds Maintenance Provider VIVARK, with the exception of the 8-13 years natural play space which is still KMBC’s maintenance responsibility, therefore KMBC incur minimal maintenance costs.
The park benefits from:
• A traditional playground for younger children
• A natural play spaces for 8-13-year olds
• Two senior and one junior football pitches
• Perimeter footpath on the easterly edge of the park
• Parking facility
In addition to the above the park also hosts the annual Prescot Carnival, usually held in the month of June. The Carnival provides a wide range of free activities and attractions for residents. The amenity offered by Browns Field does not exist anywhere else in the Town and given the lack of green space in Prescot would mean this amenity will be lost forever.
Prescot Town Council will seek further information from KMBC on why the decision to surrender Brown’s Field has been taken and lobby KMBC to have the decision reversed.
Prescot Hockey Results
Prescot Ladies 1 Oldham ladies 1
The Prescot ladies continued their fine run of form with a well earned point against Oldham.
Prescot Men 5 Bowdon 4
Prescot Men were at full strength for the visit of Bowdon. It turned into a nine goal thriller with Prescot leading two nil with Mortimer scoring twice from corners before finding themselves four two down midway through the second half. These days Prescot are made of sterner stuff and a superb final quarter saw Prescot score three unanswered goals from Johsnon (2)and Mortimer sealing victory in the final seconds to clinch the three points. With only four points separating the top seven teams in division one there’s all to play for.
Prescot Hockey Results 10th February 2018
Prescot Men 15 Blackpool 2
Prescot broke their own league goal scoring record by smashing fifteen past a sorry Blackpool. The goal festival started with Jobes, Mortimer and Boulton before Doyle and Lomax added to the rout. To be fair Blackpool have lost several players this season and tried to make a game of it. More goals from Johnson, Heaps, Boulton and Talbot condemned Blackpool to their heaviest ever defeat. The huge win has put Prescot top of the North West One scoring charts again but an indifferent start to 2018 means promotion this year might be out of reach.
South Manchester 4 Prescot 2nds 2
The Prescot twos were missing a few senior players and after conceding two early goals against Manchester it looked as though a heavy defeat was on the cards. However, Prescot settled into a good rhythm and forced the opposition keeper into several saves. Just on half time Hayes netted from a penalty corner to keep Prescot well in the game. South Manchester are a good top four side and scored from the restart and poured forward. The Prescot defence held firm for long periods and then Maher scored for Prescot from a well worked penalty corner. Prescot pushed on for an equaliser but conceded a fourth against the run if play in the final minute. With five Prescot players aged 14 playing for long periods against a senior team it was a fantastic result and the club has a thriving junior hockey section producing some real quality players.
